Chapter 37: Attending the Meeting at Headquarters
Wen Jiu heard his reply and smiled, relaxing as she said, "Then next time, I'll treat you all to a meal." Gu Zehuai nodded, "Alright, it's a promise."
The elevator arrived, and the two waved goodbye. Gu Zehuai watched Wen Jiu enter her apartment before heading home himself.
Upon returning, Gu Zehuai found the house suddenly quiet, and felt a little out of sorts. It was as if the scene of his mother chatting with Wen Jiu had been nothing but a dream. He shook his head, forcing himself not to dwell on sentimental thoughts.
Wednesday soon arrived.
Wen Jiu had hoped to sleep in, but her biological clock woke her at the usual hour. She made a simple breakfast of egg noodles, ate, and then organized her materials, double-checking for any omissions or inadequacies.
When the time was right, Wen Jiu texted another colleague to let her know she was on her way, then set out herself.
Instead of taking the subway, Wen Jiu chose to drive. Her car quickly reached the headquarters of Gu Group, where security staff were efficiently directing the parking of vehicles. After parking in the designated spot, Wen Jiu sent her location to her colleague, Ye Yu.
Ye Yu arrived soon after.
The two walked into the headquarters lobby together. Inside, numerous assistants were guiding visitors. After checking Wen Jiu and Ye Yu's invitations, an assistant led them to the elevator, heading for the main conference room.
Though Ye Yu and Wen Jiu worked in different design fields, they shared common ground.
They exchanged views on materials where their expertise overlapped.
Soon, the elevator reached the conference room floor. The assistant courteously showed them to their seats.
In City A, there were more than ten subsidiaries, covering fields such as new energy, high technology, real estate, jewelry, and design. Most attendees were representatives from important departments.
By eight fifty, nearly everyone had arrived.
At that moment, Gu Zehuai walked in and took the principal seat.
Wen Jiu noticed him as soon as he entered. Gu Zehuai noticed her as well. Their gazes met—silent and wordless, yet louder than any conversation.
Eventually, Wen Jiu looked away first.
Gu Zehuai took his seat.
A secret excitement stirred in Wen Jiu's heart. In this conference room, no one knew they were acquainted, nor did anyone notice their exchange of looks. This was their private understanding.
Chen Yizheng stood off to the side, introducing the event, but Gu Zehuai's mind wandered.
When Chen Yi finished, it was Gu Zehuai's turn to speak. He returned to the moment and began calmly.
Wen Jiu watched him from her seat, the corner of her lips curving slightly. Apparently, she wasn't the only one distracted.
Then came the long proceedings of the meeting.
When it was Wen Jiu's turn, she spoke with poise, outlining the development of the company's design department and presenting relevant strategies for the company's growth.
Gu Zehuai watched Wen Jiu on stage, feeling she radiated confidence. Her remarkable abilities were shining in the field she excelled at.
Gu Zehuai felt an inexplicable urge to stand beside Wen Jiu immediately, though he had no official status yet. He realized he had to work hard—and he believed he would succeed.
A single meeting had sent Gu Zehuai's thoughts wandering far. Of course, Wen Jiu was unaware of all this.
After the meeting, Ye Yu received a call from the kindergarten—her child had gotten into a conflict with another child. Ye Yu quickly said goodbye to Wen Jiu and rushed off in a taxi.
Wen Jiu planned to have lunch before returning to the office.
As she debated what to eat, she noticed a crowd of employees heading in the same direction, including staff from the subsidiaries who had just presented.
Upon closer look, it was the Gu Group cafeteria.
Wen Jiu's interest was piqued. She had long heard that Gu Group's cafeteria offered a wide variety of delicious dishes. Having already tried the offerings at Jingyan, today she would sample the headquarters' cuisine.
