Once the call connected, before Wen Jiu could even speak, Gu Zehuai said first, “Jiujiu, happy New Year’s Eve. I miss you.”

Wen Jiu smiled. “Aren’t we seeing each other in a few days? I miss you too.”

After chatting for a while, Wen Jiu worried that her parents would be waiting too long downstairs, so she hurriedly said goodbye to Gu Zehuai and hung up.

Downstairs, Wen Jiu’s mother looked at her with a warm, amused smile. Being stared at like that made Wen Jiu a little reluctant to speak. Her parents already knew she was dating, yet for some reason she still felt awkward.

After learning that Wen Jiu’s boyfriend was Gu Zehuai, Wen Jiu’s father had immediately thought of the looks and words Gu Zehuai had given at the birthday banquet. His heart turned bitter. So his daughter had been targeted so early on, and he had not even realized it back then.

Still, with Wen Jiu’s mother persuading him, Wen Zhan gradually accepted the fact that his daughter was in love.

With a smile, her mother said, “Jiujiu, were you just on the phone with your boyfriend? When are you going to bring him home for a visit?”

Wen Jiu thought for a moment. “Sure. I’ll bring him back then, hehe.”

“Look at you, all foolish over love,” her mother said, half helpless, half amused.

Wen Jiu did not argue, only laughed it off.

After all, this was nothing compared with Gu Zehuai’s foolishness. If one had ever witnessed that side of him, one would laugh for days at the sheer contrast.

Her mother did not tease her any further. The family of three watched the New Year’s Gala, then each returned to their own room.

The Wen family had no tradition of staying up through the New Year. On New Year’s Eve, once the reunion dinner was over and they had gone out for a stroll, they would usually just head home.

As midnight approached, Gu Zehuai called her on video.

Seeing the darkness behind him, Wen Jiu casually asked, “Where are you? Why is it so dark over there?”

Gu Zehuai smiled without answering, only turned the camera around to show her. “Jiujiu, do you know where this is?”

At the sight of it, Wen Jiu sat straight up in bed. “You’re downstairs at my house! Wait for me, I’m coming down right now!”

Wen Jiu quickly stepped onto the balcony and saw a car parked by the front entrance—the one Gu Zehuai usually drove.

She hurriedly grabbed a coat and was about to leave, but when she reached the door and started downstairs, she deliberately lightened her steps.

Only when she quietly reached the entrance did Wen Jiu lose all restraint. She threw herself into Gu Zehuai’s arms just as he got out of the car.

Gu Zehuai immediately held her tightly, but soon noticed something was wrong. “Why did you come down wearing so little?” he said, quickly taking off his own coat and draping it over her.

The weather for the New Year was not especially cold, but the nighttime air was still chilly, with a steady breeze.

Worried that Gu Zehuai might catch cold, Wen Jiu opened the back door of the car and tugged him inside with her.

“What made you come find me?” Wen Jiu asked as she clung to his side, acting spoiled.

“I came because I missed you. Besides, you’re the one who clings so much—if I didn’t come, how could that do?”

Gu Zehuai really was stubborn, Wen Jiu thought.

“Who exactly is clingy? I won’t say it—figure it out yourself.” She would never admit that she was the clingy one.

Gu Zehuai gave in. “All right, all right, it’s me who’s clingy. Jiujiu, I miss you so much. I miss you so much.”

I missed you, so I came to see you at once.

The drive from the Gu family residence to the Wen home took more than an hour, so Gu Zehuai must have set out the moment he hung up.

The two of them chatted and waited for midnight together.

A few minutes later, Wen Jiu looked at the countdown on her phone, lifted it, and held the screen toward Gu Zehuai. “Happy New Year, Huai!”

“Happy New Year, Jiujiu.”

As soon as he said it, Gu Zehuai leaned down and kissed Wen Jiu gently.

He skillfully parted her lips and deepened the kiss, tender and meticulous.

Wen Jiu’s warm breath brushed lightly across Gu Zehuai’s face, making his blood surge even more fiercely.

Held in Gu Zehuai’s arms, Wen Jiu was entirely surrounded by his presence. His body held her tightly, and Wen Jiu felt as though she had already completely sunk into him.

Little by little, Wen Jiu looped her arms around Gu Zehuai’s neck and answered his kiss with fervor.

Gu Zehuai sensed it and drew her in even tighter.

Their breathing gradually grew heavier.

In truth, it was not only Wen Jiu who was losing herself.

After a long while, Gu Zehuai finally released Wen Jiu, adjusted her collar, and tried hard to steady his emotions.

He was afraid that if they went on, he would not be able to restrain himself. After all, when it came to Wen Jiu, his self-control was practically nonexistent.

Gu Zehuai still held Wen Jiu in his arms, but she no longer dared to lean against him so carelessly. It was too dangerous.

She could feel it.

In the end, Gu Zehuai spoke first. “Go back inside, Jiujiu. It’s late. Rest early when you get back.”

Wen Jiu worried about him driving at night, but Gu Zehuai reassured her, saying he would message her once he got home.

Only then did Wen Jiu relax a little. She watched him drive away before tiptoeing back inside.

She thought her own behavior was rather amusing—like they were involved in some clandestine affair.

Back in her room, Wen Jiu was already half asleep. It was only after receiving Gu Zehuai’s message that he had arrived home safely that she finally fell into a deep sleep.
