Chapter 67: Silver Wolf
In the stillness of the deep night, Jiang Yan tossed and turned within the bamboo hut, unable to find sleep. The little dwarf dragon’s thunderous snores threatened to bring the hut down around them.
At that moment, the eagle-headed beast perched atop the treetops let out several infant-like wails, its cries echoing through the darkness and sending chills down the spine.
Immediately after, Qi Yu’s voice came from outside, tinged with urgency. “Young master, second young master, something’s happening!”
“Little Dragon, Little White, Mo Mo, get up quickly.”
Jiang Yan hurried to wake the little dwarf dragon and its companions, swiftly opening the bamboo hut’s door. Bai Tao did the same from his room. Outside, Qi Yu and the others stood waiting, their expressions grave.
“Qi Yu, what’s going on?” Bai Tao asked in a low voice.
Qi Yu reported, “Young master, the eagle-headed beast has issued a warning. Ferocious demon beasts must be prowling nearby.”
Hearing this, Jiang Yan quickly stowed away the bamboo hut.
The little dwarf dragon rubbed its eyes and yawned. “Does this mean more meat?”
Black Flower, emboldened by her father’s bravado, chimed in, “Does this mean more broth for us?”
“Meow, meow, meow...” Little White fluffed up, alert and tense.
The little dwarf dragon grinned at Little White. “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.”
Jiang Yan, witnessing the dragon’s confidence, thought to himself: of course, it’s a divine beast. If it can’t even handle demon beasts of the lower realm, wouldn’t that be disgraceful?
He assured Qi Yu and the others, “There’s no need to worry. With Little Dragon here, we’re in good hands!”
Bai Tao agreed, “That’s right, Qi Yu. Grandmaster Dragon burned that giant serpent with a single breath of fire.”
With both young masters vouching for the yellow little dragon’s strength, Qi Yu and the other disciples finally eased their furrowed brows.
But just then, twelve enormous silver wolves leapt out from the underbrush.
Their eyes glinted with predatory danger as they threw back their heads, howling deafeningly at the sky.
Qi Yu’s expression changed instantly. “This is bad. They’re summoning more of their pack.”
It was Jiang Yan’s first time seeing such massive, well-fed silver wolves. He felt as though the lot of them wouldn’t even make a mouthful for these beasts.
“Little Dragon, you’re up,” Jiang Yan addressed the dwarf dragon.
Head held high, chest out, the little dwarf dragon marched confidently to the frontmost silver wolf, speaking with undeniable authority, “Since you lot don’t recognize your grandmaster, I shall show mercy and grant you a chance to live. Leave at once, and I won’t hold you accountable for disturbing my rest.”
A glimmer of contempt flashed in the wolf’s eyes as it lowered its head to glare at the little dragon, releasing a thunderous roar, showering the small dragon in spittle.
Catching the dragon’s scent, the wolf’s mouth watered—what a nourishing prize!
It struck with a paw, but the little dwarf dragon nimbly dodged aside.
Wiping the spit from his face, fury surged within him. He cursed, “You insolent, clueless wolf! How dare you be so rude!”
He opened his jaws and unleashed a torrent of fire at the lead wolf. But the wolf countered with a blast of icy breath, instantly freezing the flames. The frozen fire shattered to the ground, scattering into fading sparks.
The little dwarf dragon fumed, “You—you dare play tricks!”
With a low, guttural growl, the alpha wolf gave the order to attack. Greed flashed in its eyes—it would be the first to feast on the nourishing little dragon, while the others could divide up the rest.
Sensing the peril, Jiang Yan and the others unsheathed their swords.
The little dwarf dragon had mentioned before that its strength was suppressed in the lower realm. Jiang Yan guessed that the alpha wolf’s power was likely on par with the dragon’s.
“Everyone, be careful,” Jiang Yan warned, then brandished his Flame Sword, charging the nearest silver wolf.
He unleashed a sword technique that combined thunder and fire—a new move he’d developed called “Blazing Thunder Strike.”
Fire and lightning entwined, storming toward the silver wolf. The beast struck by Jiang Yan’s blade collapsed instantly, convulsing with pain, its fur charred and blackened.
“Hey, stay back! I haven’t bathed in ages—you won’t find my meat tasty!” Bai Tao’s voice rang out as he gripped his meteor hammer, trembling as a silver wolf slowly closed in.
The wolf pressed forward relentlessly, while ice formed around Bai Tao’s feet, pinning him in place and leaving him powerless to escape.
Qi Yu and the others were locked in their own desperate struggles, unable to break away and help Bai Tao despite their anxiety.
Jiang Yan hurried to Bai Tao’s side, once more unleashing the Blazing Thunder Strike upon the wolf threatening his friend.
With a thud, the wolf fell, felled by the surprise attack.
“Thank you, Jiang Yan. You saved me again.” Bai Tao looked at him with heartfelt gratitude.
“No need to thank me, brother.”
With that, Jiang Yan used his fire magic to melt the ice encasing Bai Tao’s feet.
Meanwhile, the little dwarf dragon continued to battle the alpha wolf. Dragon blood surged within, fueling a mighty strength. It opened its jaws and unleashed a scorching breath straight at the lead wolf, who failed to dodge. A large patch of its silver fur was instantly scorched black.
Howling in pain, the wolf glared at the little dragon, then lunged in fury.
But the little dragon was ready. It dodged deftly and spat a torrent of flames, trapping the wolf in a sea of fire. Encircled by blazing flames, the wolf’s icy breath evaporated into steam the moment it left its maw. With a final, mournful cry, the wolf collapsed and moved no more.
The scent of roasted meat filled the air, whetting their appetites.
The little dwarf dragon’s stomach rumbled once more. Extinguishing the flames, it grabbed a sizzling piece of wolf meat and began devouring it with gusto.
The remaining silver wolves, witnessing this, turned tail without hesitation. With their alpha fallen, there was no reason to stay—unless they wished to become the next meal.
“This wolf meat is truly delicious. Did they come all this way at this hour just to deliver supper to your grandmaster?” the little dwarf dragon muttered between mouthfuls.
