Chapter 57: The Bet (1)
Dan Qiuqiu was sitting by the roadside, munching on a sandwich while waiting for Qiao Xi.
She took another big bite just as Qiao Xi appeared.
“Qiao Xi!” she called, running over. “I bought extra sandwiches—want one?”
“I already had breakfast,” Qiao Xi replied.
“Wow.” Dan Qiuqiu suddenly exclaimed, “You don’t look so well. Didn’t sleep well last night?”
“Probably not. I had a dream.”
“Speaking of dreams, let me tell you: the night before last, I had this really funny dream…”
They chatted as they walked, soon arriving at school.
Entering the classroom, they noticed it was much quieter than usual.
Dan Qiuqiu asked Gu Panxi, who was reading, “What’s up? Why so serious this early?”
“Don’t you know? There’s a math test soon,” Gu Panxi said.
“What? I had no idea! I’m doomed—I didn’t review at all,” Dan Qiuqiu panicked.
“It’s fine. You just transferred here. Even if you don’t do well, the teacher won’t mind.”
“That’s a relief, but still, they should’ve announced the test in advance.”
“It’s probably because you don’t pay attention in class,” Gu Panxi said, turning to Qiao Xi. “I bet you know about it, since you’re always focused in class.”
Qiao Xi nodded. She hadn’t reviewed either, but her grades were decent, so she wasn’t worried.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?” Dan Qiuqiu protested.
“How would we know you didn’t know about the test?” Gu Panxi replied.
Luckily, Dan Qiuqiu wasn’t too concerned about grades. She grumbled for a bit, but after the test, she let it go.
The fourth period was P.E. The gym teacher was a young man, not strict at all—the class was basically for fun. So, as soon as the third period ended, everyone felt as if school was already over.
When class started, they lined up, ran two laps, then the teacher set up a basketball game.
The girls voiced their dissatisfaction, since it was mostly the boys who played, while the girls could only sit by and cheer. Admittedly, watching Ji Niansheng play basketball was a treat, but he was the only one both handsome and good at the game.
“So what do you all want to play?” the P.E. teacher asked.
“How about we just end class early?” someone suggested.
Most of the class agreed, but of course, the teacher refused.
“Let’s have an arm-wrestling contest—boys versus girls!” a boy called out, immediately sparking protests from the girls:
“What a shameful idea…”
“Exactly, how can girls compete with boys in strength?”
“That’s not necessarily true—some girls are pretty strong…”
Back and forth the students argued, until the gym teacher intervened, “Alright, how about this: five boys and five girls, best of five rounds. If the boys win, all the girls have to run three laps around the track. But if the boys lose, then…”
“Ten laps!” the girls shouted.
“It’s a bit unfair, but fine—we’ll go easy on you. Not that you’ll win anyway,” the boys said confidently.
Both sides began picking their teams.
The girls immediately chose Qiao Xi and Dan Qiuqiu, confident that anyone who had transferred from Fengyang would be good in a fight and strong enough. Gu Panxi volunteered to join as well…
As for the boys, Ji Niansheng was the first to be chosen, followed by the four strongest boys in the class, making it clear they had no intention of letting the girls win.
