Chapter 44: Consolidating Resources
Li Chuan and Princess Lana found their tacit understanding growing steadily, and this time, they set their sights on a far more ambitious goal—reorganizing and expanding the trade routes.
Princess Lana had long shouldered the heavy burden of restoring her royal family's former glory, while Li Chuan’s remarkable foresight and resource-allocation capabilities made her see the true potential of a partnership. They decided to forge a brand-new trade plan, integrating the princess’s royal trade routes with Li Chuan’s coastal resources to navigate the current complex situation and generate greater mutual benefits.
In the early morning, sunlight poured into the post station’s reception hall, where Li Chuan and Princess Lana sat around a wooden table covered with maps.
"Li Chuan, according to the intelligence gathered previously, my royal trade routes have suffered devastating blows, and many caravans have sustained heavy losses due to Japanese pirate raids. If we are to restore smooth passage along these routes, we must find reliable and steady support," Princess Lana said, pointing to a red-circled location on the map, which marked one of her primary trade hubs.
Li Chuan nodded in agreement. "Your Highness makes a valid point. However, judging by the current circumstances, relying solely on our existing strength will hardly suffice to counter these hidden enemies lurking in the shadows. Therefore, I suggest we temporarily alter our strategy—pooling our current resources to focus trade activities on a few key areas while opening up new channels for cooperation."
Lana raised an eyebrow. "You mean we should abandon some of our trade routes?"
"Not abandon, but adjust," Li Chuan replied, gesturing at the map. "For instance, regions like these feature complex terrain that easily serves as an ambush point for the enemy; we can temporarily delay our expansion there. As for here—" he pointed to another harbor, "—this place is close to coastal fishing villages. I can deploy a guard detachment to protect it, and in the short term, it can serve as the starting point for our new trade route."
Lana pondered for a moment and gently nodded. "This is a sound approach. Your fishing village resources can indeed serve as solid backing, but have you considered that the pirates are not our only threat? Those who covet my royal trade routes will certainly not give up easily."
"That is why we must take the initiative," Li Chuan said, his gaze sharpening. "While defending our existing routes, we must find a way to create a false impression, lure the enemy deep into our trap, and then crush them in one decisive blow."
Lana stared at him, a flicker of admiration flashing in her eyes. "It seems you have been prepared for this all along. How shall we proceed with the specifics?"
Over the next few days, Li Chuan and Princess Lana summoned their respective core teams to discuss the details of the plan.
First came the integration of trade route resources.
Li Chuan utilized the grain, salt, and fish products of the fishing villages as primary export commodities, proposing to channel them into the broader inland markets via Princess Lana's royal trade routes. At the same time, he promised to supply Lana with premium coastal timber and rare seafood as the key commodities for their bilateral trade cooperation.
"The value of these resources goes without saying, but how do we control the risks of transportation?" Lana raised the critical question.
"The transport teams can be escorted by our vessels. We have coastal patrol fleets, and coupled with your caravan guards, this dual layer of security will make it difficult for the enemy to easily succeed," Li Chuan explained.
Lana nodded and immediately added, "Then I will contact the remaining caravans loyal to the royal family to ensure the goods can circulate smoothly within the inland markets. However, the problem of funding remains."
She frowned. "Our current capital is limited. Can we sustain such a large-scale operation?"
Li Chuan smiled faintly. "Your Highness need not worry; I have prepared for this. We can quickly accumulate startup capital through a few small-scale, tentative transactions. Once the first batch of goods successfully reaches the inland markets, the subsequent capital chain will naturally begin to flow."
Upon hearing this, Lana finally revealed a trace of a smile. "Li Chuan, I've found that cooperating with you brings true peace of mind."
With the plan finalized, both sides swiftly swung into action.
The first batch of goods consisted of local specialties organized by Li Chuan from the fishing villages, including sun-dried fish, refined salt, and premium timber. These goods were in high demand in the inland markets, but had long been difficult to export due to disrupted trade routes.
Under Lana's arrangement, a caravan loyal to the royal family took charge of the transport, escorted by Li Chuan's guard detachment. The caravan was meticulously selected, and its route deliberately avoided conventional danger zones.
"The success or failure of this trial run is of paramount importance," Lana said, standing at the docks and watching the caravan set off. Though filled with lingering apprehension, she possessed absolute confidence in Li Chuan's arrangement.
Days later, good news arrived: the first batch of goods had successfully reached the inland markets and sold at prices far exceeding expectations! Not only that, but Lana's caravan had also won the support of numerous inland merchants, who eagerly expressed their willingness to cooperate with the royal family and expand the scale of trade.
"Li Chuan, we have succeeded!" Lana exclaimed excitedly, holding the ledger sent back by the caravan to share the joy with Li Chuan. "These profits are more than enough to support our next step."
Li Chuan, however, appeared exceptionally calm, warning in a low voice, "Although the first step went smoothly, our enemies will never sit idly by. They will soon detect our movements and may even launch a counterattack."
Lana nodded, the smile on her face gradually fading. "You are right. From now on, we must be twice as cautious."
Late one night, as Li Chuan was studying the plan for the next phase of trade route expansion, Lana suddenly walked into his room holding a document.
"What is this?" Li Chuan asked, looking up.
Lana handed the document to him and said earnestly, "This is the internal trade agreement of my royal family. I want you to participate in its formulation as well."
Li Chuan looked at the document, his expression shifting slightly. "Your Highness, this is core royal confidentiality. How can you entrust it to me?"
"Li Chuan, I trust you," Lana said, looking directly into his eyes. "Throughout these days, I have witnessed the efforts you've made for my trade routes. I know you are not someone driven by selfish gains. Since we are partners, there should be no reservations between us."
Li Chuan fell silent for a moment before taking the document and nodding solemnly. "Thank you for your trust, Your Highness. I will not fail this commission."
Lana smiled faintly, a touch of tenderness softening her eyes. "Li Chuan, perhaps you do not know, but you make me feel that I am not alone."
Hearing this, Li Chuan felt a jolt in his heart. He looked up at her, only to discover a complex and unspeakable emotion hidden within her gaze.
At that moment, the relationship between the two seemed to undergo a quiet transformation.
Buoyed by the successful trial run of the first trade batch, Li Chuan and Lana felt fully confident about their upcoming actions. They decided to further expand the scale of cooperation while strengthening the security defenses of their caravans.
However, just as Li Chuan had anticipated, the enemies' reaction followed closely behind.
A dark conspiracy was brewing, and their next move was destined to be fraught with twists and challenges...
While Li Chuan and Princess Lana's trade plan steadily advanced, the enemy also began stepping up their retaliatory actions.
One day, Lana received an urgent report from the inland. Unfolding the letter, her brow quickly furrowed. Seeing this, Li Chuan put down the ledger in his hand and asked, "What is it?"
"Our caravan was ambushed on its return journey, and over half of the goods were lost," Lana said in an icy voice, clearly suppressing her anger to the utmost. "The enemy's methods were extremely cruel, and they deliberately left behind a provocative token."
She handed the token to Li Chuan—a small, blood-stained flag bearing the bold characters: "The Royal Family Shall Fall, Harbour No Delusions."
Li Chuan sneered. "It seems this time, our enemies wish not only to sever our trade, but to utterly destroy the prestige of the royal family."
With a profound look in her eyes, Lana murmured, "If we fail to respond, I fear not just the trade routes, but the entire royal family will plunge into crisis."
Li Chuan nodded, pondering for a moment before saying, "Since the enemy has shown their hand, we might as well play along with their game and root out their forces completely."
Lana's eyes brightened. "You mean, drawing the snake out of its hole?"
"Precisely," Li Chuan analyzed in a low voice. "For these people to precisely ambush our caravan, they must have planted an insider long ago. We will first manufacture some false intelligence to lure the enemy into acting again, and simultaneously lay hidden ambushes to wipe them out in one fell swoop."
Li Chuan and Lana began intensely plotting and deploying their trap. They meticulously designed a sham large-scale trade operation and deliberately leaked the "importance" of the cargo through several suspected targets to ensure the enemy caught wind of it.
Meanwhile, Li Chuan mobilized the elite guard detachments from the fishing villages to set up ambush points all along the trade route. The terrain they chose was complex and ideal for counterattacks, ensuring that once the enemy fell into the trap, there would be no escape.
After personally inspecting every single defensive fortification, Lana could not help but praise Li Chuan, saying, "Your meticulousness and sharpness always bring me peace of mind. Had it not been for you, I truly would not know how to handle these schemes."
Li Chuan waved his hand with a smile. "You flatter me, Your Highness. I am merely a rough man who understands only simple strategies."
Lana smiled softly, her eyes filled with gratitude.
With all preparations complete, Li Chuan and Lana calmly awaited the enemy taking the bait.
Sure enough, on the very next day after the intelligence was released, the enemy forces began assembling near the caravan's inevitable route. Clearly believing this would be an easy raid, they walked unsuspectingly into the encirclement.
As the enemy's vanguard approached the caravan, archers hidden in the mountain forests on both sides instantly let fly their arrows, striking their targets with pinpoint accuracy.
"It's an ambush!" the enemy cried out in panic, but it was already too late.
At Li Chuan's command, the guards who had been lying in wait poured out from all directions, trapping the enemy tightly in an iron ring. After a fierce battle, the main force of the enemy was almost entirely wiped out.
Standing on a hill overlooking the battlefield, Lana gazed down with a stern expression. "These people are mere pawns; the true masterminds remain hidden in the dark."
From the captured spoils of war, Li Chuan recovered an enemy operation plan, which detailed ambush schemes for multiple royal trade routes and even listed the names of several suspected insiders.
"With this intelligence, our next actions will be much easier," Li Chuan handed the plan to Lana. "However, if the enemy dares to target the royal family so flagrantly, it means they still have backup plans. Your Highness, we must be even more careful from here on."
Lana nodded slightly, a hint of lingering worry clouding her eyes.
Although the ambush had been a resounding victory, the enemy soon launched a new counter-offensive. This time, they shifted their tactics to infiltrating the fishing villages and spreading rumors in an attempt to drive a wedge between Li Chuan, Lana, and their allies.
"Word is that the royal family's plan to utilize the fishing village's resources is merely for temporary revival. Once the situation stabilizes, the fishermen will be cast aside."
"Li Chuan has long since made a secret pact with the royal family; all his arrangements now are simply for his own benefit."
Rumors flew wildly, and the villagers' trust began to waver.
Lana felt both angry and helpless. "These rumors are complete nonsense! Yet, how are we to prove our innocence?"
Li Chuan, however, remained exceptionally calm. "Your Highness, rumors die among the wise. There is no need for excessive words; we simply need to let the facts speak for themselves."
He immediately summoned the village elders and representatives of various merchant caravans, publicly disclosing the cooperative agreement between the fishing village and the royal family while explaining the method of benefit distribution in detail.
"As everyone can clearly see, not only has Her Highness the Princess not encroached upon the fishing village's resources, but she has consistently helped us expand our trade routes. These rumors are nothing more than malicious instigations by our enemies."
Li Chuan's forceful words, coupled with the transparency of the agreement, quickly pacified the villagers' doubts.
In the wake of this rumor storm, the trust between Lana and Li Chuan deepened even further.
One evening, a month later, Lana walked alone to the defensive fortifications of the fishing village, gazing up at the starry night sky. Seeing this, Li Chuan stepped forward and asked softly, "What is Your Highness thinking about?"
Lana let out a light sigh. "I was thinking that, had it not been for you, I would likely have suffered total defeat long ago."
Li Chuan smiled indifferently. "Why would Your Highness say that? I have merely done my best."
Lana turned around and looked at him earnestly. "Li Chuan, do you know? I once believed that the dignity of the royal family had to be defended with blood and iron. But after cooperating with you, I have come to understand that true power stems from the unity of human hearts."
Li Chuan was slightly stunned, then said softly, "Your Highness's words are profound. Whether it is the fishing village or the royal family, as long as our hearts remain united, there is no difficulty we cannot overcome."
Lana revealed a smile, her eyes brimming with trust. "Li Chuan, thank you. No matter how many storms lie ahead, I hope you will always stay by my side."
"Of course," Li Chuan answered solemnly. "What I have promised Your Highness, I will never abandon halfway."
Through this crisis, the bond between Li Chuan and Princess Lana grew tighter still. Not only did they stabilize their existing trade routes, but they also absorbed more allies, laying a solid foundation for their subsequent actions.
Yet, their enemies were also quietly gathering strength in the shadows. The true test was still waiting for them ahead.
