Chapter 23: Ambush Amidst the Tides
The silhouette of a pirate warship emerged where the sea met the sky. In the fading light of dusk, the towering sails and dark, pitch-black deck of the "Sea Ghost" were starkly visible. This massive pirate vessel was the nightmare of every coastal village; its thick wooden hull and formidable firepower were more than enough to crush any local fishing boat or settlement. Yet, this time, it was not defenseless civilians waiting for it, but an ambush team poised and ready.
Li Chuan stood on the command boat anchored behind a reef, his gaze steady. He and the village fishermen had calculated the tides repeatedly, selecting a complex stretch of shoals as their battlefield. These waters were not only dense with reefs but subject to intense tidal shifts; a single misstep would leave a large vessel stranded or dragged away by treacherous undercurrents.
"The Sea Ghost must pass through here to continue south," Li Chuan said, tracing the path on a sand table with a wooden stick. "We only need to lure it into this zone and concentrate our fire. They won't make it out alive."
Lana stood nearby, listening intently to Li Chuan’s plan. As the tactical advisor for the fleet, she offered a crucial addition: "The warriors on that warship are numerous, and their cannons have significant range. If they sense something is wrong, they will retreat quickly. We need a contingency—a way to block their escape route."
"Two fishing boats have already been positioned to circle behind them," Li Chuan nodded. "They will ignite floating logs and barrels of fire oil to create a blockade when necessary."
"Excellent," Lana said with a smile. "It seems tonight will be their end."
As the Sea Ghost slowly entered the shoals, the surroundings grew unnaturally quiet. The pirate leader, Tsuda Taro, stood on deck, scanning the area with vigilance. Reports from the shore had reached him that the local villagers had grown increasingly defiant, and several small pirate raiding parties had recently been attacked with significant losses.
"Villagers only know a few parlor tricks; they are hardly worth mentioning," he sneered. "Once we arrive, they will be on their knees begging for mercy."
Suddenly, faint movement appeared on the water ahead. Several small fishing boats seemed to be scrambling through the shallows, as if they had just spotted the pirates and were fleeing in a panic.
"Give chase! Don't let them escape!" Tsuda Taro commanded. The Sea Ghost immediately veered to pursue them at full speed. However, the pirates were unaware that these fishing boats were the bait, their sole mission to lure the warship into the heart of the ambush.
"Prepare!" Li Chuan signaled from his command boat behind the reef, waving the flags to the surrounding fleet.
When the Sea Ghost was fully within the kill zone, the fishing fleet acted with swift precision:
1. Fire to Ignite Fear: Several boats laden with oil jars rushed out from behind the reefs, charging directly at the Sea Ghost. As they closed the distance, the fishermen ignited the jars and threw them onto the ship's bow, sending flames erupting into the air. The deck of the Sea Ghost descended into chaos as pirates scrambled to douse the fire, but the flames, fanned by the wind, spread rapidly, consuming the wooden structure.
2. Tides as a Weapon: Simultaneously, the main strike force used the rising tide to flank the Sea Ghost. The fishermen pushed pre-prepared spiked wooden rafts into the water, blocking the warship's retreat. Small pirate scouting boats tried to break through but were caught on the spikes and immobilized.
3. The Coordination of Spears and Nets: Using harpoons and rope nets, the fishermen boarded the pirate vessels that had been pushed into a dead end by the fire. Their movements were skilled and precise, mirroring a hunt for giant fish: first ensnaring the opponent in nets, then delivering a lethal strike with spears or harpoons.
Despite the ambush, the pirates' fighting strength remained significant. Some warriors reacted quickly, using bows and matchlocks to return fire, while others dove into the water to attempt a breakout from the other side. However, the fishermen were prepared; they had already set up spiked stakes and floating nets underwater, trapping any pirate who jumped overboard.
"Hold the line! Do not let them break the encirclement!" Li Chuan bellowed.
The flames on the Sea Ghost were eventually brought under control. Seeing this, Tsuda Taro ordered his cannons to fire upon the fishing boats. Yet, the reefs and shallows severely limited the warship's maneuverability, and the firing angles were poor. The fishermen, relying on the agility of their small boats, constantly closed the distance, forcing the pirates into a brutal melee.
As the battle reached its conclusion, Li Chuan led his main force onto the Sea Ghost. They drove back the remaining pirates and discovered a cache of supplies in the hold: weapons, grain, and gold and silver jewelry recently looted from other villages. For the fishing village, these supplies were a godsend.
"These are exactly what we need," Li Chuan said, looking at the spoils piled on the deck with a satisfied smile. He turned his attention to the captured pirate soldiers: "Take them back; we need to interrogate them for more intelligence."
This victory did more than just provide supplies; it sent the villagers' morale to unprecedented heights. From their initial cowardice and desire to hide, they had evolved into a force capable of ambushing a powerful enemy, and everyone felt the weight of their own growth and transformation.
"Li Chuan, we really can win!" a fisherman exclaimed excitedly. "If we can defeat a warship this big, what else is there to fear?"
"That’s right," Li Chuan replied with a laugh. "As long as we stand united, we will surely drive the pirates out of these waters for good."
That night, laughter and cheers echoed around the village campfires. Li Chuan, however, sat apart, silently considering the next steps. He knew the true strength of the main pirate force had not yet been revealed. Tougher challenges lay ahead.
"This battle is only the beginning," he whispered to himself. "We must become stronger."
As night fell, moonlight bathed the serene sea, reflecting the waters that had just witnessed such fierce combat. The battlefield was a scene of ruin; the Sea Ghost was completely incapacitated, listing and grounded between the reefs, its masts charred by fire. The remaining pirates had been captured or killed. The cheers of the fishermen echoed in the night sky, but Li Chuan’s eyes never left the half-sunken enemy ship.
After the battle, the fishermen quickly transported the spoils back to the village. Li Chuan and his trusted aides carefully inspected the haul: a large quantity of weapons, grain, gunpowder, and stolen goods.
"This gunpowder and weaponry is a gift from the heavens," Lana noted while recording the inventory. "We can use these to arm more men; it will make our future battles much easier."
Li Chuan nodded and signaled for the villagers to move the supplies in batches, but he remained uneasy.
"Gunpowder is not something pirates would leave on an ordinary warship," he frowned. "The sheer volume of these supplies suggests they likely have a much larger plan."
"Are you saying this was just a decoy?" Lana asked, alert.
"It is highly probable." Li Chuan held up a captured pirate flag, pointing to the emblem. "This flag belongs to the 'Black Dragon Gang,' a massive pirate organization. They wouldn't be defeated so easily. Our successful ambush will surely invite a much more savage retaliation."
Just as Li Chuan predicted, the next morning, the low, rhythmic beat of war drums echoed through the thick sea fog. A much larger pirate fleet approached the village. At the lead was an even more monstrous warship—the "Black Dragon." It was massive, equipped with multiple cannons, and possessed firepower many times greater than the Sea Ghost.
"It seems they have come for revenge," Lana said, standing at the lookout post and gazing at the enemy ships on the horizon, her expression grave.
Li Chuan calmly analyzed the situation: "The Black Dragon is slow, but its firepower is immense. Their goal is to destroy the village and force us into a direct confrontation. We must not meet them head-on."
He quickly gathered the fishing teams and deployed them: "The enemy is too numerous; we have no chance in a direct clash. But their fleet is cumbersome and slow. We can use the terrain and the tides to wage a guerrilla war, gradually wearing them down."
Li Chuan decided to use small groups of fishing boats to distract the pirates, employing a "hit-and-run" strategy to lure the enemy vessels into the traps the fishermen knew so well.
The fishing fleet split into three groups, hiding in three different directions within the bay. When the pirate fleet approached, the first group moved in, harassing the enemy ships with fire arrows before quickly retreating. The pirates, unable to catch them, were instead led into the reef zone, where several small pirate scout boats were destroyed, suffering heavy casualties.
"These pests are too fast!" the pirate captain on the Black Dragon roared. He realized the fishermen were intentionally stalling for time, draining their patience and strength.
As the tide began to recede, Li Chuan led the second group of fishing boats in a flank attack. Using floating logs as camouflage, they threw barrels of fire oil into the water and ignited them. The raging inferno spread across the sea, trapping the smaller pirate vessels in a sea of flames. Meanwhile, the third group of boats seized the chaos to board the enemy ships, engaging the pirates in close-quarters combat with harpoons and spears.
"Hold on! The tide will trap them soon!" Li Chuan shouted, directing the fishermen to execute the plan methodically.
After hours of intense fighting, the pirate fleet had suffered heavy losses, and their morale began to collapse. Although the Black Dragon attempted to break through, its massive size caused it to strike the reefs repeatedly, slowing its movement to a crawl. Li Chuan seized the moment, ordering all fishing boats to concentrate their fire and launch a final assault with fire oil and rockets.
"The battle hinges on this one strike!" He held a torch and ignited a small boat packed with gunpowder. The vessel charged toward the Black Dragon, and in a violent explosion, the enemy flagship was completely destroyed.
Seeing their flagship perish, the remaining pirates fled in disarray. The fishermen cheered; they knew this victory was not just about defending their land and goods, but a lethal blow to the pirates' arrogance.
The battle ended, and a brief peace returned to the fishing village. Yet, Li Chuan did not relax. He knew the pirate threat was far from over.
"Victory does not mean the end; it may be the start of a new round of conflict," he told the villagers. "We need more allies and greater strength if we are to truly defend these waters."
Lana stood by his side and said softly, "This victory has proven your leadership. From now on, you will be the core of trust for all the coastal villages."
Li Chuan nodded, his gaze fixed on the distant horizon. He knew the true test had only just begun.
