Chapter 19: Crisis Reemerges

Night fell, the sea breeze howled, and starlight shimmered faintly on the distant horizon, silently foretelling the approaching storm. At the entrance to the fishing village, Li Chuan stood at a concealed lookout point, his gaze fixed on the vague shadow far away. He whispered, "They're coming. They haven't given up after all."
This time, the pirate assault was evidently more organized. Under the cloak of darkness, dozens of small boats silently approached the shore, each packed with well-armed soldiers. They had learned to be cunning, first sending an advance squad to stealthily infiltrate the village entrance, intending to dismantle the villagers’ resistance through ambush.
At that moment, the villagers had already dispersed and stood ready, following Li Chuan’s orders. Every key village entrance was fortified with rudimentary defenses and sentries, while some villagers set traps at critical points.
“Remember this,” Li Chuan said softly to several young villagers beside him, “these pirates excel in speed and stealth, masters of surprise attacks. But once exposed, their formation crumbles easily. If we hold our ground and cut off their retreat, we will gain the upper hand.”
“Brother Chuan, can we really do this?” a young fisherman asked nervously, clutching his bamboo spear tightly.
“Don’t worry. We’re ready,” Li Chuan reassured him with a pat on the shoulder, then looked to Lana. “Is your unit in position?”
Lana nodded calmly. “We’ll flank them from the side. Once their vanguard strikes, my guards will immediately sever their connection with the main force.”
Deep into the night, the pirates’ vanguard quietly approached the village entrance. Their leader signaled his men to move stealthily. They soon noticed the village’s defenses were thin—only a few simple fences and faint silhouettes of villagers visible.
“Hmph, a ragtag bunch,” the pirate leader sneered, brandishing his sword and motioning his men forward.
Yet, as they crossed the first defense line, the ground beneath suddenly shifted. A sharp “crack” echoed as several traps triggered, bamboo spikes sprang up, wounding several pirates instantly.
“Ambush!” the leader shouted, but it was too late.
“Attack!” Li Chuan gave the command. Villagers hidden nearby swiftly emerged, launching a fierce assault with bows and crude slings. Though their weapons were simple, their attacks, aided by the terrain, were precise.
Lana directed her guards to encircle from the flank, quickly cutting off the pirates’ vanguard from the shore.
Caught off guard by the villagers’ fierce resistance and Lana’s reinforcements, the vanguard descended into chaos. Seizing the moment, Li Chuan led a group to concentrate fire on the enemy commander, killing him swiftly.
“Retreat! Fall back!” the pirates scattered in panic, but their escape routes were sealed. Almost their entire force was annihilated, with only a few managing to flee back to the main fleet at sea.
The villagers erupted in cheers—perhaps for the first time tasting victory against the pirates.
“We won! We actually won!” a young villager shouted excitedly.
Yet Li Chuan remained vigilant, his voice grave. “That was only their vanguard. The real threat is still to come. Stay alert—the next battle will be the most crucial.”
Lana nodded in agreement. “These pirates never give up easily. They will send stronger forces to exact revenge.”
Turning to the village chief and the gathered villagers, Li Chuan declared, “Listen well. We must now realign our defenses and prepare for a prolonged fight. Tonight’s victory shows we are not weak. United, we will protect our home!”

As night deepened, under Li Chuan and Lana’s command, the villagers fortified their defenses, crafted new weapons, and gathered strength for the next battle. Meanwhile, aboard the pirates’ main fleet, a new plot was unfolding.
The leader’s deputy gritted his teeth, “These villagers dare to resist? They’re courting death! This time, we will mobilize fully—kill them all and burn the village to ashes!”
Before he finished, a shadowy figure in black laughed coldly, “Don’t be hasty. The enemy defeated our vanguard, so they have some skill. If you want to win, you must follow my plan…”
A more brutal battle was quietly approaching, and the fate of the fishing village was being rewritten in the hands of Li Chuan and its people.
At dawn, the sea breeze carried a salty tang, the air thick with tension and a grim sense of foreboding. Battle scars were evident at the village entrance—bloodstains and shattered armor testified to the previous night’s ferocity. But the joy of victory did not erase the villagers’ fear of the coming fight.
“The vanguard was wiped out. They won’t stop,” Lana stood atop the village gate, eyes scanning the sea. The pirates’ main fleet was faintly visible, their numbers greater than expected.
Li Chuan frowned. “These aren’t ordinary pirates. They have trained troops and clear battle plans. Someone is commanding them from behind the scenes.”
Lana nodded, her gaze troubled. “The prisoner we captured last night confessed. Their leader is a warrior named Masato Ōshima, a notorious sea commander among the pirates. Ruthless but tactically brilliant—he’s skilled at psychological warfare to break his enemies.”
“So, we’re facing an even more cunning enemy,” Li Chuan said grimly.
Lana glanced at the busy villagers nearby, building defenses as per Li Chuan’s orders but with visibly low morale. “The villagers’ spirits are weak. If we fail this time, we have nowhere to retreat.”
Li Chuan took a deep breath, climbed a platform, and addressed the gathered villagers with a strong voice: “Friends! Last night, we won our first battle. This proves the pirates are not invincible! With your courage and wisdom, you made those arrogant invaders pay.”
The villagers lifted their heads, their eyes beginning to shine.
“But as you see, this is only the beginning. The pirates’ main force is about to attack. Their goal is to destroy our homes and take our loved ones. Can we just sit and wait for death?”
“No!” a young villager shouted, voice trembling but resolute.
Li Chuan continued, “Right! We cannot! We must use our fishermen’s wisdom and unity to tell them: this is our land, our sea! As long as we stand together, we will defend our village!”
The villagers’ spirits ignited. Several elder fishermen stepped forward. “Li Chuan, whatever you say, we follow!”
Lana joined them firmly, “I will use all my strength to assist. If we hold this attack, the pirate threat will be broken for good.”
From then on, the village worked like a well-oiled machine, with Li Chuan and Lana coordinating. Li Chuan set traps at key defense points, applying tactical knowledge gained from his seafaring days—for example, embedding sharp bamboo spikes in tidal flats, and placing obstacles at the main entrance to slow enemy advances.
Lana led her guards in training villagers in basic combat and organized nighttime patrols. To boost morale, she personally taught archery, guiding the youth in aiming.
They also repurposed materials seized from the pirates’ vanguard to craft simple weapons—sharp spears, slings, and modified torches.

The village women joined in, preparing food and gathering medical supplies for the wounded. An elderly woman told Lana, “Young lady, we faced sea bandits in our youth. As long as the men fight, we will support them!”
Lana smiled gently, nodding. “With your support, we will win.”
Meanwhile, aboard the pirates’ main fleet, Masato Ōshima listened coldly to his subordinates’ reports.
“The village’s defenses have improved, and their morale is up,” a scout reported on bended knee.
“Foolish peasants, do they think a few bamboo sticks and stones can stop us?” Masato sneered. Approaching the map, he pointed to the village’s defenses. “Tomorrow, we attack in three waves. The first front feints to create chaos; the second flanks to break their lines; the third sneaks in to capture their leader!”
“Ha-yi!” the pirates shouted in unison, bloodthirsty gleams in their eyes.
That night, Li Chuan patrolled the village as usual. He keenly noticed flickering lights on the distant sea—no ordinary fishing boats.
“Look at those lights,” Li Chuan whispered, “the pirates are probing our defenses.”
Lana nodded, ordering intensified night patrols and dispatching agile villagers to quietly infiltrate near the shore to monitor pirate movements.
Sure enough, soon the scout returned with news: “The pirates are gathering near the coast, likely preparing a surprise attack!”
Li Chuan gave the decisive order: “Strengthen defenses immediately. Move the villagers to safe areas. Everyone capable of fighting, to your posts!”
As dawn's first light crept over the horizon, the village stood ready. Li Chuan and Lana arranged the final defensive line at the gate, both aware this would be the decisive battle.
“Li Chuan,” Lana whispered, “if we hold the village this time, what will you do afterward?”
Li Chuan paused, then smiled. “I just want the villagers to live in peace, no longer fearing threats from the sea.”
Lana looked at him with a flicker of admiration. “Then let’s work together to drive the pirates out of these waters once and for all.”
As the first rays illuminated the sea, the pirate warships steadily advanced. The air was thick with the oppressive tension before battle. Li Chuan drew his long sword at his waist, determination shining in his eyes.
“Everyone, prepare! This time, we’ll make them understand—this is not a place for their lawlessness!”
