Chapter Ninety-Five: My Dad Is Li Gang
Wang Qiming cautiously took a step back. When he saw that the woman had shown no particular reaction, he hurriedly turned and ran.
“Move on them!” Wang Qiming shouted to the attendants behind him.
The few attendants had been terrified ever since Wang Qiming was taken hostage. If anything happened to him, they would never know another good day.
Now that they saw him retreating safely, they rushed forward at once.
“You men be careful. Do not you dare injure my beauty,” Wang Qiming said, and once he was out of danger his true nature surfaced again. Seeing his men charge in, he feared they might wound the cold and lovely woman.
But his worry was needless. Those petty ruffians were no match for the ice-cold heroine.
They went in quickly, and came flying back even faster. In the blink of an eye, the woman had sent them crashing back one after another. Their movements were eerily alike, each clutching his belly and groaning in pain.
During the earlier chaos, Zhao Huan had already reached Zhao Yan’s side and shielded her behind him. Zhang Xin and the others were also on guard, for this woman’s martial skill was truly formidable.
Zhao Huan patted Zhang Xin on the shoulder, signaling him to remain calm, then stepped forward and said to the woman, “Many thanks to you, heroic lady, for bravely rescuing my younger sister just now. Since it is already time for a meal, allow me to host you to a simple dinner. Would that be agreeable?”
The cold beauty was just about to refuse when Zhao Yan stepped up, took her arm, and said sweetly, “Come on, come on. My brother does not often invite people to dinner. Besides, you saved me, so it is only right that we treat you to a meal.”
The woman had intended to decline, but after Zhao Yan clung to her arm she actually began to hesitate. Such coquettish pleading was not something men could withstand, but women could hardly endure it either.
Seeing that the woman still had not spoken, Zhao Yan did not care whether she had accepted or not. She simply tugged her along.
The woman struggled once, but seeing how firmly Zhao Yan was pulling her, she hesitated, and in the end decided to leave with her.
“If you have the guts, then don’t run!” Wang Qiming shouted after Zhao Huan and the others.
Zhao Huan and the rest ignored him and headed for the Drunken Immortal Tower.
Business at the Drunken Immortal Tower was truly booming. Though it was still early, the place was already lined with carriages and sedan chairs.
When Zhao Huan arrived, the proprietor hurried forward with a respectful smile. “Sir Huang, you have come. Shall it be the private room on the top floor again?”
Zhao Huan nodded. “Very well. Bring a few of your specialties, a pot of good wine, and some pastries as well.”
The proprietor quickly agreed and was just about to lead Zhao Huan upstairs when, from afar, a shout suddenly rang out: “You three, stop right there!”
Zhao Huan paused midway up the stairs and turned to look. To his surprise, Wang Qiming had chased after them again.
This time Wang Qiming had not come alone; he had brought many helpers, among them a number of government soldiers.
At the very least, there were twenty or thirty of them.
Zhao Huan frowned. The proprietor was about to step forward, but Zhao Huan waved him back, signaling that he need not interfere. He wanted to see just how arrogant this Wang Qiming could be.
“Brat, after hitting someone, you still want to run? You ought to ask around and find out who Wang Qiming is in Bianjing City. Offend me, and you are dead for sure,” Wang Qiming said viciously. Then he turned to the lead officer and said, “Brother Qin, these three are the ones who beat me just now.”
The officer in front heard this and said to the constables beside him, “Seize all three of them.”
The constables obeyed and moved at once to arrest Zhao Huan and the other two.
“Hmph. I was the one who struck him. It has nothing to do with these two. If you want to arrest anyone, come for me,” said the cold beauty, stepping forward and drawing the sword at her waist, pointing it at Wang Qiming.
“What now? You dare resist? Defying the imperial authorities is a capital offense,” Wang Qiming sneered.
“So be it,” the woman replied carelessly. “If you want to arrest me, let us see whether you have the ability.”
Zhao Huan shook his head. This girl truly had a fiery sense of honor. He stepped forward, pressed her sword downward with his hand, and said, “Leave it to me.”
The woman looked at Zhao Huan deeply. For some reason, those few simple words from him made her feel as though she could not resist. It was the pressure of Zhao Huan’s bearing.
Zhao Huan stepped forward and said to the lead officer, “Who gave you the authority to arrest people so casually?”
The officer, upon seeing Zhao Huan, instinctively felt that this man was no ordinary person. Yet standing beside him was the young son of former Chancellor Wang Fu. And who in this world had more influence than Wang Fu?
“Enough nonsense. If you know what is good for you, come with us obediently. That way you will suffer less fleshly pain,” the officer said to Zhao Huan.
“Arresting people without distinguishing right from wrong—you have a bold nerve,” Zhao Huan snapped.
“Heh. From the look of you, you are no common man either, so I might as well tell you. This young gentleman here is the son of Chancellor Wang Fu. If you are sensible, go over and apologize to Young Master Wang. Otherwise, I cannot help you,” the constable said.
Zhao Huan shook his head and said coldly, “You draw your pay from the imperial court, yet you openly commit such an act of twisting black into white. Truly, you are bold beyond measure. From this day on, you need not wear that uniform anymore.”
The constable was so angered by Zhao Huan that he almost laughed. “What a joke. You say I should not wear it, so I should not wear it? Who do you think you are, the Son of Heaven himself?”
As he spoke, an uneasy feeling suddenly stirred in his chest.
“Men, seize them! If they resist, beat them hard,” the lead constable said ferociously. At this point, he could only use such means to drive away the fear in his heart.
“Who dares!” Zhao Yan stepped forward and stood in front of Zhao Huan. The cold beauty also raised her sword once more, clearly ready to kill at the slightest provocation. Zhao Huan could already feel the fierce killing intent radiating from her.
“I am Princess Lekang. Who dares lay a hand on me?” Zhao Yan said.
She was Princess Lekang?
At once, everyone present was stunned, especially Wang Qiming. Others might not know who Princess Lekang was, but he knew perfectly well. She was the emperor’s most beloved younger sister, cherished almost as if she were his own flesh and blood.
Wang Qiming looked again at the man beside Zhao Yan, and cold sweat began to stream down his face.
