Chapter Nine: Just Trust Me, Will You?

Bosoye had never seen anyone with such a weak constitution faint repeatedly like this. Perhaps it was because there was a little life growing inside her. The girl lay quietly in her arms, the clean scent on her body dispelling the surrounding smell of blood completely.
—
When Wen Zhi woke up, the daylight was bright. She raised her hand to shield her eyes from the glaring light. The man beside her stood up and ladled out some stewed meat soup. “Drink more to nourish yourself.”
“The doctor said you’re malnourished and physically weak.”
How foolish—this was the first time he’d seen someone faint just from seeing blood. The doctor explained it was due to neural overload caused by extreme shock.
“Aren’t you supposed to participate in the competition? Don’t you cooks usually dissect animals?” Bosoye said.
“How did you know I’m entering the competition?” she asked, puzzled.
“Because,” he tilted his head, “I’m a judge.”
What? He could even be a judge?
“Did you study culinary arts before?” she asked tactfully.
“No, I didn’t. I invested in this competition.”
“The clothes your contestants wear…” He looked at Wen Zhi with a mischievous gaze, as if he wanted to devour her.
Wen Zhi was speechless.
“The venue, the prize money — all funded by me.” The man leaned back awkwardly, his broad frame struggling to find comfort on the narrow stool.
“What kind of scores can you give?” Bosoye raised an eyebrow.
“I score based on feeling,” he said. “Sometimes on the dishes, sometimes on the chef’s looks.”
He then asked, “There shouldn’t be any ugly guys on your team, right?”
“Don’t want it to ruin my appetite.”
“Then go back to the Bosoye family if you want to eat, don’t mess around with scoring here.” Wen Zhi didn’t want to joke about the competition with him, but his casual attitude made her feel like her words were hitting cotton, powerless to express her frustration.
“Oh~ you, come, beg, me, ah.” He enunciated each word.
“Get lost.” Bosoye wasn’t angry either. He suddenly stood up and tapped her forehead unexpectedly. “Are you stupid? You don’t know your fiancé is the judge and you didn’t bribe him?”
It hurt, but the man was still smiling. Wen Zhi tried to be angry, but when she saw his right upper arm tightly wrapped in bandages, her anger immediately deflated.
“Thank you.”
They had been talking about other things and had forgotten about last night’s incident. How could this man change so quickly? Before, he had always been so shameless.

Now he was like a loyal dog.
“That man has already been caught.”
“He won’t be out anytime soon.”
“Thank you for what happened yesterday.”
Her first reaction to the incident yesterday was also the most genuine. In W City, she only knew Yu Hang, the Wen family, and Bosoye.
Of course, there was also Shen Dan.
But Yu Hang had a weak heart since childhood, and making her worry by staying up for her was harming herself. The Wen family might not even know where she was now.
The only person she could rely on in W City was Bosoye, a man she had known for such a short time. She thought bitterly.
“Stop thanking me, just drink the soup. My time is very precious.”
From Bosoye’s perspective, Wen Zhi’s distant gaze was always filled with gratitude.
He wasn’t some great saint, so it wasn’t a big deal.
Wen Zhi lifted the bowl and drank the stew in one gulp. Perhaps she truly didn’t want to waste his time. She drank quickly, her posture far from elegant, tilting her head back, her throat moving like waves. Her loose clothing slipped down, exposing a large patch of skin.
Bosoye’s Adam’s apple moved up and down.
He took the clean bowl from her, and the girl blinked at him.
“If you need anything, just press the bell. I’m going to the company.”
“Mm.”
After Bosoye left, Wen Zhi took out her phone to ask her team for leave, saying something had come up.
Chi Minmin worried and wanted to visit her but was politely declined.
It wasn’t anything serious; she could be discharged in the afternoon.
She took this half-day’s rest as a time to recuperate, for there was still a long road of preparation ahead.
She was also trying hard to forget what happened last night.
She patted her face and prepared to leave.
Suddenly, a strong force pulled her back inside the room.
“Click.”
The door locked naturally.
Memories from last night flooded back all at once. Before she could see who was in front of her, Wen Zhi’s fear triggered a reflexive slap that landed on the person’s face.
“Zhi Zhi…”
The man looked at her in disbelief.
“I know you hate me.”
Shen Dan moved closer to her.
“You should hate me.”
Had it really come to this?
“Why are you here?” Her body trembled, her hands shook.
Wen Zhi tried hard not to look at the face she had just slapped until it turned red.
Her tone was so calm, but only she knew that terrifying calm was just a mask to cover her trembling.
“They told me you were in trouble, so I came right away.”
“But I saw him here with you all along.”
He was Bosoye.

“Why bother? You are President Shen now.”
“I’ve never slept with Wen Tang.”
“And I never will.”
Her eyelids twitched. Wen Tang? That beautiful girl he was with that day?
She was shocked by his bluntness.
“It’s none of my business.”
She used all her strength but still couldn’t shake off the hard, burning palm on her arm.
Suddenly, something warm pressed against her shoulder.
It was the man’s head.
His voice, trembling with emotion, came from above her heart.
“I called you so many times since that day. Explain to me, what’s going on between you and Bosoye?”
“Did the Wen family force you?”
The air froze for a few seconds. The pressure he exerted on her was neither heavy nor light, just like in high school, when he controlled her with mature ease.
Her eyes stung. She endured the pain in her chest and lifted his head.
“I woke up there and didn’t know what to do…”
Shen Dan gently wiped the tears from her face with the back of his hand.
“Wen Zhi, I will make everyone who hurt you pay. Trust me, okay?”
If she could drown in the sweet words of the man before her, it would be good.
But Wen Zhi wanted to be more rational.
“No more. Go your own way.”
“She… Wen Tang is very beautiful. You two are perfect for each other. I almost have my own home now. Bosoye treats me well.”
“Did tossing you onto that mountain road mean he cared for you?”
His face reddened as he shouted in anger.
“He can be like me…”
“Don’t like Bosoye, okay? Wait for me.”
“How can a person’s feelings be so resolute? Do you still remember the promise you made at seventeen?”
At seventeen, he said he would marry her.
“Maybe one second you say you love me, and the next you pretend not to know me.”
She said bitterly.
“I can explain.”
He was persistent.
She closed her eyes.
“Let’s just live our own lives.”
“I’m pregnant.”
Shen Dan’s reddened eyes, soaked with tears, widened in shock. He stepped back helplessly.
She closed her eyes and pushed him away forcefully before leaving.
No matter who it was, get lost. Don’t come destroy the hard-won peace of my life again.
